Fantastic Services, itself a cleaning company, gives £15 to £25 per cleaner per hour on contract for the rest of the UK outside London, and £20 to £30 for ad hoc work. Size of space, business type, frequency and out-of-hours work move the price.

Bark gives an average UK rate of £18 an hour, in a range of £16 to £20, with city averages of £17 in London, £18.50 in Manchester and £20 in Birmingham, Leeds and Leicester. It says businesses with high foot traffic, such as salons and retail, cost more, and that window and carpet cleaning are extra.

Fantastic Services sells cleaning, so read its figures as a trade guide, not a neutral survey. It says out-of-hours work adds £5 to £10 an hour, roughly 15 to 25 per cent.
What moves the price
- The size of the space and how many restrooms it has.
- The type of business and how many people use it.
- How often it is cleaned.
- Whether the work is in or out of working hours.
- Extras such as windows and carpets.
