About Elm, Emneth and Christchurch
Elm lies about a mile and a half south of Wisbech on the B1101 to March, with a Grade I church, All Saints, and a needle spire; Thomas Aveling, co-founder of the steam-roller makers Aveling and Porter, was born there in 1824. Emneth, bisected by the A47 near the River Nene, has St Edmund's Church, where the Rev. W. V. Awdry, creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, was vicar from 1953 to 1965. Christchurch, close to the Norfolk border, has a church built in 1863 where Dorothy L. Sayers' father was rector from 1917 to 1928; her novel The Nine Tailors is set in this area.
