About the Deepings and Crowland

Market Deeping has held a market since at least 1220 and stands on the River Welland, with Georgian stone buildings, a limestone packhorse bridge dated 1651 and a market cross; it is the seventh-lowest-lying town in England. Deeping St James, about a mile east, has a Grade I church whose tower and spire date from 1717 and a village lock-up made with stone from a 15th-century wayside cross. Crowland, in South Holland on the A16, grew round Crowland Abbey (founded about 701), whose bells were the first church bells broadcast by the BBC, in 1925, and whose 14th-century Trinity Bridge now stands on dry land.

The Census 2021 wards give a sense of size: Market and West Deeping 7,104 residents (11.8 per cent of households rent privately), Deeping St James 7,255 (15.3 per cent) and Crowland and Deeping St Nicholas 6,829 (13.3 per cent).

Getting here

A 4-mile A15 bypass took traffic out of Market Deeping in 1998. Crowland is on the A16 and the B1166. The old station at St James Deeping closed in 1964, and Peterborough is the nearest mainline station. Market Deeping is about 26 miles from Wisbech by road.
