About Yaxley and Stanground
Yaxley, in Huntingdonshire about four miles south of Peterborough and just off the A15, appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 and has grown from 3,943 people in 1971 to 9,409 at the 2021 census. Its Grade I church of St Peter stands not far from the Norman Cross column, a memorial to the French prisoners held at the Norman Cross camp from 1796, described as the world's first purpose-built prisoner-of-war camp. Stanground, south of the River Nene in the City of Peterborough, has St John the Baptist church with its 12th-century Lampass Cross and a conservation area; the Fletton bricks that gave nearby Fletton its name were made from Oxford clay in the area.
