About Thorney, Eye and Newborough

Thorney is a planned "model village": from 1849 the seventh Duke of Bedford rebuilt it to designs by Samuel Sanders Teulon, and rows of his estate cottages still line the streets inside a conservation area that Peterborough City Council extended in 2008. Eye, about four miles west, grew from fewer than 3,900 people in 2001 to over 4,400 in 2011 and has its own conservation area, St Matthew's Church (1846) and the eight-storey Eye Cornmill. Newborough, on the B1443, was formed as a parish in 1822 out of Borough Fen and has grown from 68 properties in 1831 to 1,136 in 2011, most of them detached houses and bungalows.

Together they sit in the Census 2021 ward of Eye, Thorney and Newborough, with 10,170 residents in 4,234 households, of which 635 (15 per cent) rent privately. It is reclaimed fenland: the Earls of Bedford drained nearly 18,000 acres around Thorney from the 1630s.

Getting here

The A47 links Thorney and Eye to Peterborough, and a bypass now takes the through traffic round each village. The old railway station at Eye Green closed in 1957, so residents use Peterborough station.
