About Sutton Bridge, Gedney and Tydd
Sutton Bridge grew up around the crossing of the River Nene: the Grade II* Cross Keys Swing Bridge, opened in 1897, is the third bridge on the site and carries the A17 over the river towards King's Lynn. The town also has Port Sutton Bridge, a 62-acre dry-cargo port, and a 790 MW gas-fired power station opened in 1999. Gedney, on reclaimed fenland, is described as one of the most intensive crop-growing areas in the UK, with a Grade I church whose tower stands 86 feet high. Tydd St Giles is the northernmost settlement in Cambridgeshire; its Norman church dates from 1084, and Tydd St Mary had a First World War airfield.
